Heating/cooling of extruder or injection moulding cylinders.
Construction/version types:
Narrow ceramic heater bands KH 211 of widths 33 mm, 48 mm, 63 mm and 78 mm (widths above 78 mm possible
in special cases) are fitted at regular intervals in the bottom half of a housing using clamping brackets.
The connection flange for the cooling fan in addition to specially-shaped air deflectors for distribution of the cooling
air in the axial and tangential directions are also integrated in the bottom half of the housing. The individual design
of these air deflectors ensures the best-possible even circumfluent flow around the cylinder and therefore counteracts any undesirable bending of the cylinder and corresponding wear.
The spacious electrical connection chamber, which stands out due to its optimum accessibility, is located on the
side of the fan flange housing. The individual heater bands have been electrically connected before delivery.
An electrical supply cable of a defined length can be connected if required. Likewise electrical connection can be
made through industrial plugs.
The air outlet opening is implemented as standard in the upper part of the housing with air slots.
Additional air deflectors can be fitted to the air outlet opening as an option. As an alternative the ecowema® flap system can also be mounted. It helps to prevent heat loss caused by convection.
Sensor bores and notches will be taken into account as far as technically possible.
The completely removable housing cover and the spreadable ceramic heater bands ensure ease of installation.
Installation of KE 300 cooling elements possible if sufficient distance from heating bands.

Special ceramic heating-cooling bands of type KH 214 in widths of 30 mm, 48 mm and 63 mm are mounted directly on the cylinder
in regular intervals. In cases of increased cooling requirements the flexible aluminium cooling
elements KE 300 (widths 34 mm, 47 mm, 60 mm) can be mounted between the heater bands. A stencil supplied
makes alignment of the heater bands/cooling elements in the corresponding cylinder zone much easier.
In the next stage the connection flange for the cooling fan with terminal box is fitted to the cylinder using stable
round facing plates. This flange includes specially-shaped air deflectors for distribution of the cooling air in the axial
and tangential directions and the electrical connection with ceramic-terminalblock or industrial plug connection are
also integrated. A power-supply cable of a defined length can be supplied. The size of the air outlet opening is matched to the corresponding flow volume of the intended fan, and is fitted with a grille structure for optimum airflow.
The two vertically divided double-walled shrouds filled with a 25 mm thick insulating filler are then bolted to the side
flanks of the fan flange housing. In the upper area they include the ECOWEMA® flap system KSHK for reduction of
heat loss. Supplementary sheet metal covers can be supplied to increase the safety against being burned. These
covers can be made of aluminium eloxated material in the colours red or blue. Sensor bores and apertures will
be considered as far as technically possible. This construction guarantees optimum accessibility to the installed
ceramic heater bands, which enables simple replacement of the heater bands without having to carry out complete
dismantling of the heating-cooling assembly.
In this manner, a (retrospective) conversion to a higher heating performance is made simple through the installation
of further KH 214 flexible special ceramic heater bands or to a higher cooling performance through the installation
of flexible aluminium cooling elements KE 300.

In order to intensify the cooling effect in the case of air-cooled extruder cylinders, additional elements in the form of
cast aluminium half shells with cooling fins are often fitted between the heater bands.
These elements increase the surface which achieves
better heat transfer between the cylinder surface and the
cooling air.
Whereas high costs for the casting mould and the additionally necessary mechanical processing for fitting to the
internal surfaces and attaching the tensioning devices occur for the cast aluminium cooling elements, this is not
the case for the KE 300 flexible cooling element.
This system is modular and consists of a large number of individual cooling elements with cooling fins corrugated
on both sides at a height of 28 mm. The elements are made into a row of flexible belts using two tensioning ropes and can be produced infinitely
variably for all cylinder diameters - larger than Ø 60 mm.
Available widths: 34 mm, 47 mm, 60 mm.
The flexible aluminium cooling element is supplied ready for assembly with a spring screw connection which
compensates thermal expansion and guarantees even pressure against the cylinder surface. Furthermore the
gaps between the single cooling elements allow a more intense swirling of the cooling air. The wavy structure of
the single cooling-fins increases the surface of the elements, which improves thermal transfer.
A sensor bore of diameter 17 mm can be made in the
centre.
In comparison to a cast aluminium cooling element, this solution actually has an improved cooling performance
in many cases because the material used has a higher thermal conductivity, and because the gaps between the
individual cooling elements and the corrugated fin surface offers a larger heat exchange surface and a more
intensive mixing of the cooling air.
For application cases in which particularly high cooling
performance is required, we recommend combining
the flexible KE 300 cooling element with the ribbed special ceramic heating-cooling bands KH 214.

Application areas:
Heating and intensive air cooling of extruder cylinders.
Intensive cylinder air cooling enables a considerable reduction of the melt temperature whereby material degradation
due to temperatures being too high is avoided, melt stiffness at the tool outlet is increased and the cooling requirements for downstream equipment can be reduced.
This makes higher throughput performances and better product qualities possible.
Construction/version types:
• Heating conductor coils fitted in special ceramic bricks with temperature-resistant braid connection.
• Cooling fins formed on the rear for increasing the heat exchange surface which the cooling air flows past. This
results in a 2,5-fold increase of cooling surface related to the stone contact surface on the cylinder.
• The contact surface of the stone to the cylinder is shaped so that two contact lines for improved heat transmission
resultat any cylinder diameter.
• The ceramic bricks consist of a special oxide ceramic with a high thermal conductivity of 16-28 W/mK (standard
ceramic heater band: 2-3 W/mK) therefore enable a considerably higher heat dissipation than conventional
versions.
• A completely flexible heater band can be produced using the concave and convex-shaped end surfaces of the
special ceramic bricks, and this can be simply placed around the cylinder and is therefore extremely quick to fit.• Fixing is made using two stainless steel tensioning ropes with clamping screw and compression springs. The
system enables high clamping forces, and therefore guarantees a permanently positive contact, and therefore
ensures optimum heat transfer.
• The complete elimination of additional cooling fins (radiators) made of brass or copper prevents the occurrence of
scaling or oxidation. • With respect to the heater band width, centrally positioned sensor holes are possible. • Reduced energy consumption.
• The simple, modular design enables short delivery times.

To prevent of heat loss caused by convection at the heating-cooling assembly.
Retrofitting is possible if the heating-cooling assembly air outlet is fitted in the „12 o‘clock“ position. Installation
takes place on an existing air outlet dome or directly on the housing.
The airflow created by the fan opens the flaps and they close automatically when the fan is switched off. Heat energy losses during the heat-up phase and during production are effectively prevented without restricting the
effectiveness of the installed air cooling. The flexible ISOWEMA® insulation covers represent an ideal addition.
